Morse code numbers follow a logical system — easy to remember once you see it.
💡 The memory trick
Numbers 1–5: leading dots equal the digit — 1 = one dot, 2 = two dots, up to 5 = five dots (all dots).
Numbers 6–9 and 0: leading dashes count up — 6 = one dash, 7 = two, 8 = three, 9 = four, 0 = five dashes (all dashes).
| Number | Morse | Dots | Dashes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | −−−−− | 0 | 5 |
| 1 | ·−−−− | 1 | 4 |
| 2 | ··−−− | 2 | 3 |
| 3 | ···−− | 3 | 2 |
| 4 | ····− | 4 | 1 |
| 5 | ····· | 5 | 0 |
| 6 | −···· | 4 | 1 |
| 7 | −−··· | 3 | 2 |
| 8 | −−−·· | 2 | 3 |
| 9 | −−−−· | 1 | 4 |
Frequently Asked Questions
How many symbols does each Morse code number have?
Every number 0–9 uses exactly 5 symbols — unlike letters which range from 1 (E) to 4. The fixed length makes numbers easy to identify when decoding.
How do you write decimal points and commas in Morse code numbers?
The decimal point (period) is · − · − · − (dit-dah-dit-dah-dit-dah), and the comma (or thousands separator) is − − · · − − (dah-dah-dit-dit-dah-dah). Both use 6 symbols and are sent directly between numbers (e.g. 3.14 or 1,000).
What is the Morse code for zero?
Zero is − − − − − — five dashes. The only number made entirely of long signals, making it the easiest to remember.
Is there a trick to memorise Morse code numbers?
Yes — leading dots equal the digit for 1–5. For 6–9 and 0, leading dashes count up to 5. Know the pattern and you can work out any number without memorising codes individually.
How do you send numbers in Morse code?
Each digit is sent as its 5-symbol code with a standard letter gap between digits. Use the Morse code translator → to convert any number instantly.
Why are Morse code numbers longer than letters?
Morse assigned shorter codes to the most common letters (E = ·, T = −). Numbers appear less often in messages so they got longer 5-symbol codes — also making them clearly distinct from letters when decoding.
